Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an accountant to file my Self Assessment tax return?
No – you can file a Self Assessment yourself through the HMRC online portal, and for simple employed income it's quite manageable. An accountant becomes worthwhile when your affairs are more involved: self-employment, rental income, dividends, capital gains, CIS deductions or higher-rate tax. In those cases the right adviser usually saves you more in claimed expenses, reliefs and avoided penalties than the fee costs, as well as removing the stress around the 31 January deadline.
How much does a personal tax return cost?
Our personal tax returns start from £150. A straightforward employed or sole-trader return sits at the lower end; fees rise with complexity – for example rental properties, multiple income sources, dividends or cryptocurrency disposals all add time. We always agree a fixed fee up front so there are no surprises. You can see our published prices on the pricing page.
What's the deadline for filing my tax return?
For the 2025/26 tax year (6 April 2025 to 5 April 2026), the online Self Assessment deadline is midnight on 31 January 2027, which is also when any tax owed must be paid. Paper returns are due earlier, by 31 October 2026. Missing the online deadline triggers an automatic £100 penalty even if you owe no tax, with further penalties and interest accruing after that, so it's best to get organised well in advance.
Are accountant's fees tax-deductible?
Partly. If you're self-employed or a landlord, the portion of our fee relating to your business or rental accounts is an allowable expense and can be deducted, reducing your tax bill. The part relating purely to personal income (such as employment PAYE) isn't deductible. We'll make sure the deductible element is claimed correctly where it applies.
What information do you need from me to prepare my return?
It depends on your situation, but typically: details of all income (employment P60/P45, self-employment records, rental income, dividends, interest, pensions), records of allowable expenses, any capital gains, pension contributions and Gift Aid donations, plus your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and National Insurance number. We'll send you a simple checklist tailored to your circumstances so nothing is missed.
Can I switch to MSA Accountants from my current accountant?
Yes, and it's straightforward. With your authority we contact your existing accountant for the standard professional clearance and handover of your records – you don't need to have any awkward conversations yourself. We handle the HMRC agent authorisation so we can deal with your tax affairs on your behalf, and aim to make the transition seamless. You can switch at any time of year.
Do I have to be based in Fleet to work with you?
No. We're based in Fleet, Hampshire and welcome local clients for face-to-face meetings, but we work with clients across the UK using secure cloud accounting and document sharing. Whether you're in Fleet, the wider Hampshire area, or elsewhere, the service is the same.
What's the difference between a sole trader and limited company for tax?
As a sole trader you're taxed personally on your profits through Self Assessment, and you and the business are legally the same. A limited company is a separate legal entity that pays corporation tax on its profits, and you typically draw income as a salary and dividends – which can be more tax-efficient above a certain profit level, but comes with more reporting. The right structure depends on your profit, risk and plans; we're happy to model both and advise. See our limited companies and self-employed pages.
